Oh I’m very excited! As you’ll perhaps know, here at Playing by the book I’m particularly keen on books from around the world, books which invite me and the girls to explore other cultures and perspectives and so when I heard about an upcoming festival on one of my favourite blogs I knew it would be something I’d want to share with you too.
Saffron Tree is a growing repository of children’s book reviews, with particular slant towards cross-cultural/multi-cultural books. It’s one of my must-reads on my blog roll and they’ve just completed four years of blogging – a brilliant achievement by a group of passionate, articulate, funny and thoughtful writers including several I’m very proud to say are regular visitors to Playing by the book.
Later this month Saffron Tree is hosting a marvellous festival – CROCUS: Celebrate Reading Of Culturally Unique Stories, is a week-long fete starting Oct 23rd, taking us on a virtual journey across the world of books – from Eastern Europe to Africa, from Asia to Australia – presenting a good mix of stories that offer a glimpse at arts & crafts, lifestyle, traditions, mythology, food, folk tales and more.
During this week long event there will be special reviews of wonderful books, hand-picked for their multicultural flavour, the chance to win a prize, and invitations to join in with suggestions of books on the theme each day. As well as reviews to no doubt salivate over there will be interviews with authors, an editor, a storyteller and an illustrator.
In the words of Saffron Tree, “An indoor, and a virtual book festival it is, yes! Nevertheless, much like the sweet fragrance and flavor of the saffron stigmas picked from crocus flowers, we hope our fall-friendly assortment of crisp and colorful choice of children’s books will leave your senses awakened.”
I’ll certainly be at the festival – I hope to see you there too!
