Playing by the book’s inaugural Edible Book Festival is now open!
Posted on | March 19, 2012 | 81 Comments
Welcome one and all to Playing by the book’s International Edible Book Festival!
As befits any gallery opening, there are drinks and nibbles on offer (albeit virtually)
To enter the gallery, click on the scissors below to snip the ribbon and view the astonishing entries. I’m sure you’ll agree with me there are lots of very creative entries, and really, every one is a winner!
The Gallery is open for public viewing all this week. Mélanie, from Library Mice, will be choosing her top 10 Edible Books, before passing on the shortlisted entries to our Festival Patron, Emma Chichester Clark, who’s wonderful Lulu and the Best Cake Ever was the inspiration behind the entire festival.
Emma will choose her top three Edible Books from the shortlist, and the winner will be announced on Monday 26 March, here on the blog. You’ll also be able to learn more about the different Edible Books that day – everyone is invited to link up to blog posts, facebook pages, etc that they’ve written about their entry.
Once you’ve visited the gallery, please do return here to leave a comment. Which cake made you smile the most? Which cake do you think deserves to win? Which cake would you like to eat?

Thanks for the wonderful round up. Lots of lovely entries. One small thing though. When I click on any of the images, the only image that enlarges is “The Hobbit” and then I cannot go through the “next” or “Prev” button. Looks like a browser issue, I am using Firefox.

So many brilliant entries, I am loving the Owl Babies as this does remind me of bedtime reading, and the far away tree as this reminds me of my childhood reading.

It’s a triumph! What a lot of very creative people you have here… and I especially enjoyed cutting the red ribbon – lovely touch!
March 19th, 2012 @ 8:42 am
Going through all the entries made me so so so hungry. My favourite is entry 37 – The secret garden. The soil is soooo chocolicious. And the steps look so yummy. And what pretty flowers! Off to eat some chocolate now.
March 19th, 2012 @ 9:34 am
How on EARTH do you choose? Some of them are beautifully executed and show amazing icing skills, but some of the ones I like best are the ones which aren’t just copying an illustration but which have more obvious child input (or possibly just less meticulous/professional adults – but who cares?) Entry 49 perhaps put the biggest smile on my face – it doesn’t particularly remind me of LOTR, but it’s hilarious, and so obviously made with enjoyment.

Hi Elli, yes, almost impossible to choose winners I agree, and in some sense winners will be just down to personal preference – they are all so good. Yes, 49 is very funny!
March 19th, 2012 @ 9:55 am
Hi Maya, yes the soil in 37 is very clever isn’t it. As it happens I just planted a load of edible flower seeds yesterday…
March 19th, 2012 @ 9:56 am
Thank you Clara, I need a bit of gee-ing up this morning as there have been some technical issues….
March 19th, 2012 @ 9:57 am
Hi Rachel, Yes, I thought the use of icing in the Owl babies edible book was genius – so effective for feathers.
March 19th, 2012 @ 9:57 am
Polly, indeed, isn’t it! I’m generally not a fan of bears, but a strawberry shoelace one is lovely.
March 19th, 2012 @ 9:58 am
Kat, even after HOURS of looking at the entries it is almost impossible to choose favourites!
March 19th, 2012 @ 9:59 am
Thanks Jojoebi. I agree entirely! People have risen to the challenge with real creativity and flair.
March 19th, 2012 @ 10:00 am
Hi BongMom, i’ve changed some things at my end. Could you try again? Also could you make sure javascript is enabled (that’s what makes the windows pop up). If all that fails, then take a look via the Flickr account I’ve set up, having been alerted to the problem: http://www.flickr.com/photos/76256186@N05/sets/72157629252635982/
March 19th, 2012 @ 10:16 am
I am much better at eating cakes than making them so am very impressed by the skill and creativity of all of these! Lovely to see some of my favourite kids books in there – Owl Babies, Aliens Love Underpants, The Hungry Caterpillar and of course the Gruffalo! But I think my favourite edible book is the Elmer one – I love simplicity of it and the delightful colours.

#15, 20, 38 love! 49 so fun! This is all so creative, makes me want to curl up with a book and some cake…
March 19th, 2012 @ 1:39 pm
What a great selection, impossible to choose a favourite, well done everyone who took part! And thanks Zoe for your hard work putting the gallery together.
March 19th, 2012 @ 1:59 pm
We were ooohing and aaahing at a lot of them–loved the commitment (and counting!) of 100 Dresses, adored the simplicity of the Todd Parr cookies, laughed about King Arthur’s sword in the stone… and some of the entries based on Indian books made me really want to track those titles down–that’s always a good sign.

These are great Zoe! Love the Pancakes Pancakes – how fiddly that must have been. Owl Babies – what feathers! Aliens Love Underpants(8) – I just have such a soft spot for that one. You’re A Bad Man Mr Gum – hilarious. Miss Piggy – I could be a Miss Piggy eating that!
Such marvelous entries, obviously made with lots of patience and care.
Loved looking through them all!

Girls, these cakes look too good to eat!
Being a big “Stephenie Meyer” fan myself I would have to go with number 34 for the shear artwork involved in this book presentation.
Some of my other favourites have to be Miss Piggy and the Secret Garden not forgetting our favourite author Roger Hargreaves’ Mr. Men books (Mr. Bump and Mr. Happy) Well done to all a fabulous presentation!!!!
