New stock in my bookshop! And a worldwide giveaway!

posted in: 2. Illustrators and Authors | 18

It’s a new month, and I’ve changed all my stock in my lovely little Independent Bookshop. For June it’s full of a wide range of wonderful books including:-

  • the book I’d love to see every preschooler sharing with their grownups
  • ideas for exploring urban wildlife
  • a collection of surprising short stories for new readers turning fairytale staples on their head
  • a spine-tingling mystery for anyone with football fever this month
  • a rival to ‘Handa’s Hen’ for the best chicken counting book ever
  • the first volume of the most exciting children’s comics publishing event of the year
  • a supremely well written historical novel set during the First World War
  • an unusual and interesting book about what’s in mummy’s tummy perfect for sharing with a child about to become a big sister or brother
  • the book that took 50 years to appear in English but is now leaving every reviewer I’ve come across very excited.

  • You can find reviews and details of all of these books and more at

What’s more, take a look, let me know which one you like the sound of (by leaving a comment on this post), and I’ll enter you for a giveaway. I’ll pick one comment at random of those left by Midnight Sunday June 15th (UK time) and send you a copy of the book of your choice from those in my shop. The giveaway is open worldwide. Your comment must include one of the titles listed in my bookshop but that’s the only criteria for entry to this giveaway.

Please feel free to share this giveaway on Twitter (eg A worldwide giveaway of the book of your choice from @playbythebook’s @MyIndieBookshop, FB, Pinterest etc.

All my reviews in the bookshop are brand new and haven’t appeared anywhere else. If you’re moved to buy a copy of anything I’ve recommended don’t forget that at least 5% of the sales price is donated to my chosen independent bricks and mortar children’s bookshop, Tales on Moon Lane (I make no money at all from sales).

All are intriguing, but I’d love to read IN THE SHADOW OF THE ZEPPELIN, the WWI historical novel. What a generous giveaway offer. Crossing my fingers now…

I love the sound of ‘The Wild City Book’. Sounds a great book to open at any time of the year for some outdoor inspiration.

    3. Colleen Gabriel

The Disaster Diaries:Zombies! I have made a deal with a little boy in my class in Papua New Guinea that, by December, he will love reading! He is slowly coming round, but I think this book would do the trick!

I would be very interested to read In The Shadow of the Zeppelin. I love historical fiction.

I’d love a cooy of “When you were in my tummy” – it sounds beautiful!

Tough choice but given Bagl’s current interest in numbers I’d go for Counting Chickens. Keep meaning to make my own bookshop too!

Shadow of the Zeppelin, given our current interest in WWs 1 &2.

      Nice selection Zoe!

Tiger on a tree’ s illustrations look absolutely adorable. But I would choose Counting chickens, for the diversity and comparison as we have our own coop.

Keeper by Mal Peet because I can’t read Penalty until I read this as it is the sequel. I have two copies of Penalty because I accidentally bought an extra copy thinking this was the first one only to get home from hols and find out it wasn’t! I also love football and should really be reading football stories while watching the World Cup!

If lucky enough to be selected, I’d love a copy of “Bunny vs Monkey”. I’m trying to build up the Graphic Novel collection in our school library 🙂
